Identification Division

The Identification Division must be included in every source program. This division identifies both the source program and the resulting object program. In addition, the user may include other commentary information.

This chapter details the structure and syntax of the Identification Division.

Identification Division Structure

comment-entry may be any combination of characters from the character set of the computer. The continuation of comment-entry by the use of the hyphen in the indicator area is not permitted; however, comment-entry may be contained on one or more lines. A comment-entry must be contained in area B of a source line and is ended by source text in area A of a source line. A COPY or REPLACE statement within a comment-entry is considered part of the comment-entry and has no effect on the resultant source program.
